La Cabana

TripAdvisor's #2 restaurant in Lanzarote is La Cabana. It's located in Macher, not too far from Puerto del Carmen. Dinner was fabulous. Call ahead to make reservations.

The bread was delicious and the olives were tasty.

I never pass an opportunity to have foie gras--€10.50. This did not disappoint.

Seared Barbary Duck Breast--€15.50. Moist and just the right amount of pink.

Seared Uruguayan Filet Steak with Bernaise Sauce--€17.50. This was delicious. The filet was perfectly cooked and the Bernaise sauce was amazing.

Lanzarote

We spent the day driving around the southern half of the island.

Playa Blanca at the southern tip of the island.

From Playa Blanca, we headed north to Las Salinas de Janubio--salt fields that are still functional.

Los Hervideros--underwater caves made of lava. The waves force water into the caves, creating a bubbling and boiling appearance.

Charco de Los Clicos--emerald lagoon on the west coast of the island.

Beach near Charco de Los Clicos--the film locale for "One Million Year BC" starring Raquel Welch

Camel rides at Parque National de Timanfaya

The volcanic landscape at Parque National de Timanfaya

On one of the volcanic mountaintops--Islote de Hilario--sits the restaurant El Diablo. The restaurant takes advantage of the heat from the volcano to cook at this outside grill.

La Geria--wine growing region. The vines are placed inside the rock rings which shield the vines from the winds.

Plaice in the Sun

The number 1 restaurant on Lanzarote according to TripAdvisor is Plaice in the Sun. It's a British restaurant that serves traditional fish & chips. It's located in a strip mall in Playa Blanca.

Traditional fish & chips--€8.30. The breading on the cod was perfectly crisp but the cod was too thin. The chips were crispy and well cooked.

Pinocchio

We stayed in an apartment near Puerto del Carmen. We walked around town and it was full of touristy places. We had dinner at Pinocchio and regretted it.

Roast chicken with Canary wrinkled potatoes

Sauces to go with the potatoes. I think the green one had cilantro, the red was a mojo sauce and the white was aioli. None of them were too memorable.

Spaghetti Bolognese--this was terrible. The pasta was too mushy.

Restaurante Museo de Vino

We had lunch at Restaurante Museo de Vino in Arecife, near the pedestrian walkway in the center of town, Calle Garcia de Hita 8. They have an €11 menu del dia with bread and drink.

Sopa de pescado. This was excellent--the broth was flavorful and it was full of seafood.

Seafood salad.

Estufado--braised beef. Tender and great flavor.

Albondigas--meatballs

Flan--a little eggy

Great sangria--included in the meal

Arecife, Lanzarote

From Madrid, we flew Ryan Air to Lanzarote. This was our first time on Ryan Air and we liked it. There are very strict luggage allowances--only 1 carry-on, 55 x 40 x 20 cm. That's it! No purses, no computer cases, not even a dinner bag. This makes for easy boarding and everyone has overhead space.

Lanzarote is a small, volcanic island. It's 60 km from north to south and 25 km from west to east. The capital is Arecife, which can easily be seen in a couple hours.
