Another great banquet meal. Because Lugang is known for its seafood, this meal was loaded with seafood.

Lettuce Cup with Minced Squab

Sea Cucumber

Sticky Rice with Crab

Fish Maw

Xiao Long Bao--juicy pork dumplings

Scallops with Passion Fruit

Couldn't identify this dish but it was delicious nonetheless

Fruit in Taiwan

As in other parts of Asia, the fruit is amazing in Taiwan.

Buddha Head--also known as a custard apple. Peel off a section and scoop out the custardy interior--deliciously sweet.

Rose Apple. It doesn't look nor does it taste like an apple. The fruit has a waxy exterior, juicy interior and is slightly crispy.

Eating in Lugang

Lugang has some of the most delicious food you will find in all of Taiwan. My 2 favorite items were:

Oyster pancake. This is delicious. Baby oysters cooked in a batter of sweet potato starch & an egg. Mix in green vegetables, top with a sweet & spicy sauce and you have heaven on a plate.

Cow Tongue Cookies. I could eat these all day long. The cookies are flat and oval and resemble a cow tongue. It's flaky but still soft and so delicious.

Breakfast at Red Villa

Breakfast is included at the Red Villa.

It's a traditional Taiwanese breakfast with rice porridge and accompanying dishes. They will also make fried eggs or scrambled eggs and there is toast with jam and peanut butter. There is a coffee machine that will also make cappuccino and espresso.

Red Villa, Lugang

Red Villa is probably the best hotel in Lugang and it's centrally located. The only problem is trying to book a room because the website is in Chinese.

Room 126. This is a suite with a huge living room.

It also has a gigantic bathroom with whirlpool tub, 1-man sauna and shower large enough to fit a massage table.

It even has it's own pool and Jacuzzi. All this for $250/night.

Lugang, Taiwan

Lugang is located on the west coast of Taiwan. It was an important seaport in the 18th and 19th century and was the most populous city in central Taiwan until the 20th century. After that, the harbor silted and the city refused to allow railroads to pass through the city, leading to its decline. The town remained lost in time and didn't modernize. Today, the town is a tourist attraction and it is well worth a visit to see life in old Taiwan. Most of the sights can be seen in a day.

Longshan Temple--the oldest Buddhist temple in Lugang.

The temple has the most famous carved dragons in all of Taiwan. One dragon is climbing up the column while the other is climbing down.

Mo-Ru Alley (Breast Touching Alley). This is one of many narrow streets in Lugang. The street is so narrow that when two people try to pass in the street, their breasts touch. These streets existed as a fire lane.

Wall of Jars--Giant wine bottles were placed inside ships to stabilize them as they traveled from China to Taiwan. Once the bottles arrived, they were used to decorate walls. There is only a small section that has been preserved.

Folk Art Museum of Lugang. The Koo family was a wealthy family who built this French Baroque mansion in 1913. This served as their residence until they donated it and established the Folk Art Museum in 1973.

Old Market Street. This was my favorite attraction in Lugang. The windy road leads past many old residences that have been turned into shops and art galleries. Many old masters still create their ware here.

One of the old masters on Old Market Street is a woodcarver. Look at the intricate details.

Half-sided well. In the past, only the rich could afford a well. Reflecting the generosity of the Taiwanese, the wealthy would build a well and allow the public to access it from the street while the other half was for their private use on the other side of the wall.

Matsu Temple--the other great temple in Lugang. This is located at the north end of the town and pays homage to the black-faced Matsu, goddess of the sea. People now pray to her regarding health, career, farming and relationship issues.

Stan's Donut Shop

I can't believe I've live in the bay area for so long and just now discovered Stan's Donut Shop. It's located at 2628 Homestead Road in Santa Clara in the Safeway shopping plaza.

Their glazed donuts are amazing. They're by far the best donuts in the bay area. The donuts are light and fluffy and just the right amount of sweetness. We had to wait 20 minutes for them but they were worth the wait. Their glazed old fashioned donut is also good. It doesn't leave a coating in your mouth as some donuts can do. They don't have a huge selection but the main reason to come here is to get the glazed donuts. Each donut is $0.85.
