Aux Terrasses

Tournus has several Michelin restaurants.

We chose Aux Terrasses, which has 1 star, for lunch.

It's located at 18 Ave du 23 Janvier.

This was a pepper grinder. It was cast iron with the inner piece that had grooves on the bottom. Add peppercorn in the space between the 2 pieces and grind away.

We had a nice bottle of burgundy--Saint Romain 2013 Boyer for €42.

As expected with a Michelin-starred restaurant, we started with an amuse bouche. This was lobster ice cream. It was so interesting to have a savory ice cream.

2nd and 3rd amuse--Girard cheese & foie de pigeon. We didn't tell our friend she was eating pigeon liver.

4th amuse was fried fish with aioli. This was so good. The fish were light and there was no hint of grease.

You could sprinkle the fish with this special salt with fennel and mustard seeds.

We had the 3 course menu for €25. The starter was Seafish Rillette with Shaved Cauliflower. I liked the creamy rillette but wasn't sure about the cauliflower. Turns out, it added crunch without detracting from the fish.

The 2nd course was Pork with Celery Tagliatelle. The pork was tender and delicious.

Side dish of Potatoes in Olive Oil. Delicious!

Mignardise of caramels, truffles and white chocolate.

Dessert was Nectarine Soup with Lime Meringue and Raspberry Ice Cream.

This was the best lunch on our entire trip. The dishes were delicious and the staff were friendly. So much different from our other Michelin-starred experience at Stephane Derbord in Dijon. It's worth a stop in Tournus just to have lunch here.

Tournus

In the morning, we woke up to find fog. It was so peaceful and this was what I imagined barging to be like.

Our first lock of the day was a manual lock. When we arrived, the gates were closed so we had to drop 2 people off at the floating dock to prepare the lock so that we could enter.

It was 18 km back to the head of the River Seille and another 6 km on the River Saone to Tournus. It took 2 3/4 hours. In addition to the manual lock, we came upon the lock with the lock keeper. This time, he had 2 friends helping him.

In Tournus, we moored at PK 111.8 on the right bank. There was no mooring fee but we still had access to electricity and water.

Tournus was a much larger town, although the latest census in 2006 was 6200. Market Day is Saturday. This was the Hotel de Ville.

Palais de Justice

Church of St. Philibert

Inside the church, there was a carving of St. Philibert on a stone column.

The marker for the town tour also had St. Philibert's image.

Tying Up Along the Side of the River

We left Louhans after our lunch and traveled back towards Cuisery. We pulled up along the side of the river around PK 18 and tied up.

We had a beautiful sunset as we ate our dinner.

We had the wine we purchased at our education session in Beaune.

Le Saint Jean, Louhans

The only open restaurant we found in Louhans was Le Saint Jean. It was at the end of the arcaded street, near the TI.

They specialized in Bresse chicken.

This was a nice bottle of wine for €33.50.

Menu Pays de Bresse for  €31. One of the starters was a salad with prosciutto and poached egg.

One of the choices for the main was Poulet de Bresse Sauce Louhannaise. This was a nice tomato/pepper sauce.

Dessert were Petits Sables Aux Gaudes et Sorbet Cassis.

I ordered the Menu Gourmand for  €41. One of the starters was a dozen Escargots en Persillade (escargot with parsley).

The 2nd course was Poulet de Bresse aux Morilles et Vin Jaune. Delicious!

3rd course was Assiette de Fromage.

And, the last course was a choice of desserts. I chose a chocolate torte.

Cuisery to Louhans

From  Cuisery, we traveled along the River Seille to our final destination, Louhans.

Wildlife along the banks of the river.

Manual lock at Loisy, a change of 1.3 m.

Bresse chicken roaming free

Lock at Branges--the last lock before Louhans.

Arriving in Louhans--25 km and 3 1/2 hours from Cuisery. There was no mooring fee in Louhans.

Vine-covered building near the marina.

We walked across the bridge from the marina to reach the old town.

Louhans is known as an arcaded town. There was 1 main street with shops under arcades.

The town was deserted so we weren't surprised that most of the restaurants in town were closed. Market day is on Mondays and it's a livestock market.
