Jepson Center

Just a 2-minute walk from the Telfair Academy is the Jepson Center.

The Jepson Center is a museum of contemporary art.

It's a bright open building and reminded me of the Acropolis Museum in Athens. Architectural tours of the building are given daily at 3 pm and also at 11 am Tue-Sat.

The most famous exhibit in the museum is the Bird Girl sculpture, featured on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil.

Telfair Academy

You can purchase a ticket for $20 that gives you admission into the Telfair Academy, Jepson Center and the Owens-Thomas House.  There are guided tours of the Telfair Academy daily at 12, 2 pm and 4 pm and an additional tour at 10 am Tue-Sat.

The Telfair Acadmey is a former mansion built in 1818 in the neoclassical Regency style by William Jay, who built several prominent homes and public buildings in Savannah.

In 1875, the house was bequeathed to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum.

There are two 19th century period rooms, complete with furniture and china.

There is a rotunda in the museum with 19th and 20th century art.

"The Black Prince at Crecy" in the rotunda.

La Parabola by Italian artist Laurenti. It tells the story of human life--"the race toward pleasure and the descent from the heights of life when sorrow has destroyed the smiles and illusions that enlivened the spring of life."

Old Kitchen with fireplace featuring cooking and other kitchen tools available in the 19th century.

Sculpture Gallery in the lower level of the mansion.

The Olde Pink House

The Olde Pink House is listed as one of the Top 10 places to eat in Savannah.

It's located at 23 Abercorn Street, in the Planter's Inn.

It's a formal dining room. You don't need a suit and tie but a collared shirt would be appropriate.

Delicious biscuits.

Pan Seared Jumbo Lump Crab Cake and Fried Green Tomatoes, Remoulade Sauce--$13.95. This was a very nice dish and the crab cake was loaded with crab.

Sauteed Local Shrimp with Country Ham Gravy and Cheddar Cheese Grit Cakes--$10.95. An interesting twist on Shrimp and Grits and this was good.

Low Country She Crab Soup--$8.50. More crab than the one at Seafood Shack.

Crispy Half Duck, Black Vinegar BBQ Glaze--$25.95. This is usually served with a Vegetable Crepe. The duck was so tender and the skin was crispy, just the way it should be.

I wanted to try their mac and cheese and asked if they could substitute this for the crepe and they were accommodating. This was creamy and delicious.

Next door is the Planter's Tavern. It serves basically the same food but it is less formal and you don't need a reservation.

River Street

You'll also find shopping and restaurants along River Street.

There's an outpost of Wet Willie's, where you can get frozen drinks.

Huey's--dine on the balcony or inside. They have beignets.

Stop in the Peanut Shop to try samples of all things peanuts

Cheddar Coins

I wanted to try making my own cheddar coins. Here's a recipe my sister found.

Spicy Cheddar Cheese Coin

1 cup flour
1 stick butter
2 cups shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cayenne
1/2 cup chopped bacon

In mixer, cream butter. Add salt and cayenne and mix. Add flour and bacon. Dough will be clumpy. Remove from mixer and add cheddar cheese. Mix in by hand.

I added chopped bacon--make sure it is crispy or the coins will spread too much. Also, measure the cheese carefully. Too much cheese makes the coins spread.

Divide the dough into quarters and roll until it is 1 cm round. Wrap with plastic wrap and chill.

Slice into 1/4 inch coins.

Byrd's Cookies

You'll find a Byrd's Famous Cookies in City Market. There's also a shop on River Street.

Stop in and try a variety of quarter-sized cookies. I liked the Key Lime Cooler, Georgia Peach but I especially liked the Cheddar Pecan and the Jalapeño Cheddar. Four 8-oz bags cost $24.

Franklin Square and City Market

We got off at Franklin Square, Stop #16 and the last stop on the Old Savannah Tour.

The middle of Franklin square is dominated by the Haitian Monument, which pays tribute to the group of Haitian soldiers who fought for American Independence during the Siege of Savannah in 1779.

City Market is a 4-block open market with shops and restaurants.

Stop in Savannah's Candy Kitchen

to try some pralines.

You can arrange a carriage ride as well.

Statue of Marilyn Monroe in the middle of the market.

Statue of Johnny Mercer at the edge of City Market. Johnny Mercer, who wrote "Moon River," co-founded Capitol Records.

Nearby is Lady & Sons, Paula Deen's restaurant. They feature a buffet but it was in warming trays. We didn't stop to try it.
