La Fortuna Bakery

On our way to Mt. Shasta, we stopped for dinner in Williams. We stopped at a hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint called La Fortuna Bakery, located at 669 F Street. It's an order-at-the-counter restaurant. You can either get your food to go or they will bring it to your table. The tables are in the convenience store next door.

Chile Rellenos platter--$9.75. It was a huge platter and filling. My friends reported that the chile rellenos were quite good.

I had 2 tacos--steak for $2.09 and tongue for $2.29. The tongue had much better flavor. I also like fluffy Mexican rice and La Fortuna did not disappoint. .

Marie Callender's

I can't pass up a Marie Callender pie.

Even though the banana cream pie doesn't have many bananas, I love the pudding mix and the crust. I also love their fresh peach and fresh strawberry pies.

Southland Flavor

I found a Taiwanese restaurant in the south bay that I hadn't tried yet--Southland Flavor. It's located in the Ranch 99 complex on Wolfe Road.

Simmered Pig Ear--$6.25. This had great flavor.

Fried Daikon Cake--$5.25. This came with 5 pieces and was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Green onion pancake--$5.75. On the expensive side but it was well fried.

Sweet Rice Stuffed in Pork Chitterling--$5.95. This was also very good. Not mushy and the best I've had in a while.

Oyster Pancake--$7.25. I liked this as well. Nice sauce and pancake was not mush.

Deep Fried Tofu--$6.25. Loved this dish. The tofu is soft on the inside. The pickled vegetables were also very good.

Squid Potage Soup--$6.50. A little too sweet. Be sure to stir the soup well. There's a glob of BBQ sauce that needs to be mixed into the soup.

Sauteed On Choy with Garlic--$9.95. Good flavor and not greasy.

Eggplant with Basil--$11.95. On the expensive side but great flavor with the basil. The eggplant was well sautéed.

Kaede Japanese Restaurant

Kaede is located at 462 Larkfield Center. It's mainly a sushi restaurant.

Cucumber Salad--$3.

Miso soup--$2.

Tekka Maki--$4.

Caterpillar Roll--$10. Fresh water eel, cucumber & avocado.

Rainbow Roll--$12.

Tobiko--$3. This was loaded with tobiko and was good value.

Banh Xeo Ngon

Banh Xeo Ngon is located at 3005 Silver Creek Road in San Jose.

Banh Khot--$8.59 for 7. These were well prepared--not too mushy but I've never figured out why these are popular. 

Original Turmeric Banh Xeo with Shrimp, Pork & Squid--$10.99. This is crispy and delicious to each with the basket of greens.

Pandan Banh Xeo. I didn't like this as much because it was a little more mealy. Same fillings and same cost as the original.

Shrimp Salad--$8.99. This was full of carrots and I'm not a carrot fan.

Ledford House

The Ledford House is located on Hwy 1 in Albion.

The soup du jour was a peanut soup--$10. This was quite delicious with Middle Eastern tones.

Rabbit braised in White Wine, Parsnips, Carrots, Dijon Mustard & Thyme--$29. Moist and flavorful.

There is a 3-course Bistro Special for $30. The starter was a Caesar Salad.

Main was Pork Chop with Carona Beans, Butternut Squash and Tomato.

Chocolate Pot de Cream--thick and full of chocolate flavor.

Queen House

Had another lunch at Queen House in Mountain View. It's located at 273 Castro Street.

Seafood Tofu Soup--$9.99. The serving is large enough for 8 small bowls. The broth is good.

Choose 3 items from a list of 40 for $28.99. You also get rice. Salt & Pepper Fish Filet. This is one of my favorites. The fish is moist, the coating is not heavy and it's not greasy.

Salt & Pepper Spareribs. This was okay. The ribs were slightly dry.

Eggplant Tofu Clay Pot--another good dish. The eggplant is well prepared.

Chicken Fried Rice--$8.99.

Oyster Pancake--$9.99. This is authentic and has a nice sauce. Just like at the street markets in Taiwan.

Shrimp Chow Mein--$10.99.
