The Dam that Controls the Water

Because of a buildup of silt, Mont-St-Michel was gradually being connected to the mainland.

To prevent this, a large dam was built to control the water.  It's situated on the Couesnon River, near the Hotel de la Digue.

In low tide, water is released to push the sand away from the island.

Causeway linking the island to the mainland.

You can watch the tide come in, making Mont-St-Michel an island.

There is a sign warning you if the causeway will be completely submerged under water.

Hotel de la Digue--Not Recommended

Back to our Normandy/Brittany/Loire vacation, which I was reporting prior to the firestorm that ravaged Santa Rosa in October 2018. We left off in Mont-St.-Michel.

We didn't book early enough to get a room on the island and ended up staying at the Hotel de la Digue in the hamlet of La Caserne. La Caserne is the closest town to the island. The road leading to the hotel has a gate to limit traffic and you need a code to open the gate. This was a big problem. Prior to our trip,  I tried numerous times e-mailing the Hotel de la Digue to get the code. They were not responsive. Later, we found out the code for the gate is reset every day so you have to call them the morning of your arrival to get the code. At least the hotel could have responded with this information. I was hoping there was a button to connect us with the hotel at the gate but no such thing. We had to make an international call on our cell phone when we reached the gate to get the code.

The hotel had limited front desk hours. When we arrived at 8pm, we had to go to the hotel across the street to get our room key.

We booked a room with Mont-St-Michel views. It wasn't worth it. You have to lean out the window and crane your neck to see the island.

I booked a non-refundable room 3 months before arrival. A month prior to our arrival in May, the price went down and the new lower rate included breakfast. I tried to get the hotel to at least give us breakfast, but they weren't accommodating. Lesson learned: unless you want to stay on the island, don't book too far in advance.

I do not recommend the Hotel de la Digue. It was a big disappointment all around.

Screamin' Mimi's

Another Screamin' Mimi's craving. Screamin' Mimi's is located at 6902 Sebastopol Ave. in Sebastopol.

Scoop of Mimi's Mud--it's coffee ice cream, chocolate chips, cookies and fudge. The ice cream is sold by weight (including cost of cone)--$0.69/oz. This one cost about $3.

Riviera Restaurant

I found another Italian restaurant that's worthy. It's Riviera  Restaurant, located at 75 Montgomery Drive.

Grilled Polenta with Wild Mushrooms--$13. This was quite good but I wish it was a larger portion.

Bruschetta with Tomatoes & Basil--$9.

Organic Arugula Salad with Beets, Fennel & Goat Cheese in a Balsamic Vinaigrette--$9. Quite good.

Lasagne. This was the special of the night and very good.

Saigon City

I found Saigon City in San Mateo. It's located at 418 E. 3rd Avenue. We found parking on the street.

Bahn Xeo (Vietnamese Crepe)--$8.75. This was crispy and tasty.

You wrap the bahn xeo in lettuce with cilantro and mint and dip it in the sauce.

Bun Rieu (crab soup)--$8.95 for large. This was okay. It didn't have great flavor.

Pho #32--rare beef & tendon. Small for $7.95. This was quite good. The broth was clear and had good flavor. The beef was very tender.

Sam's Mediterranean Cafe

I read on Yelp that Sam's Mediterranean Cafe in Rohnert Park was good. It's located at 613 Martin Ave. It's in an industrial area and the cafe is mainly takeout. There are a few tables.

Sam made a special plate since he had just grilled some chicken. He added it to the Falafel Plate #23.  It included falafel (I like Falafel Drive-In better), mjadara (rice & lentils), dolma, Greek Salad, hummus, pita bread. The hummus was thick and quite good. The chicken was moist and delicious. He also added baba ganouj, which was the star. It was smoky and the best that I have had. This was $14.

Hummus Avocado Wrap #15. This included lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, carrots (which I left out), garlic seasoning and tahini. This was okay.

Pumpkin Curry--Kabocha squash, bamboo shoots, green beans, bell peppers, basil, squash. This was very good.
