We had read about Mix on Yelp and stumbled upon it in the downtown area of Ashland. It's a bakery & coffee shop.

 

Mix is located at 57 N. Main Street.

 

Salted Caramel Tart--$4.75. The caramel was gooey and the crust was delicious and crumbly. A little expensive but worth it.

 

Lemon Meringue Tartlet. A little too tart but the meringue was good.

 

We also tried the macaron but it was too crumbly and wasn't good and I didn't care for the gougere either. It just wasn't that flavorful.

Thursday Night Dinner

It's been 2 years since I started going to Thursday night dinner. Still can't believe I can get a 4-course dinner with wine pairing for $24.95.

Bruschetta Di Mare--Topped with Day Boat Scallops & Jumbo Prawns, Spicy Aioli & Heirloom Tomato Salsa paired with 2011 Alexander Valley Vineyards Chardonnay, Wetzel Family Estate. What a great dish. I just love the aioli. It works so well with the seafood.

  

 

Ravioli D'Anatra--Filled with Duck Mousse & Trio of Cheeses Served with Roasted Mushroom-Endive Confit, Crispy Herb Butter & Balsamic Glaze paired with 2011 Paul Hobbs Winery CrossBarn Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast. This was a nice Pinot and worked well with the mushroom confit.

 

Bistecca Ai Ferri--Grilled Marinated Flat Iron Steak Garnished with Ragout of Organic Toy Box Summer Vegetables, Olive Pesto & Russian Banana Potatoes Served in Barolo Wine Sauce paired with 2009 St. Francis Winery & Vineyards Merlot, Sonoma County. This was perfectly cooked and just the right amount of rareness. The Barolo sauce is so rich tasting.

 

Formaggio E Tartufi--Point Reyes Blue & Mt. Tam Triple Cream Cheeses Served with Candied Walnuts, Wine Poached Fruits & Homemade Chocolate Truffles paired with Fonseca Porto Bin No. 27 Finest Reserve, Portugal. This was the first time a cheese course was served. I loved it! The Blue is creamy and delicious. The wine poached raisins were amazingly flavorful. Loved this dish!

Ashland, Oregon

Continuing north on Hwy 5, we passed Mt. Shasta and crossed the border into Oregon. Just 2 1/2 hours north of Redding is Ashland, home of the Shakespeare Festival. I came here as a senior in high school as part of an AP English trip. This was only my second time in Ashland.

 

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival lasts from February to October and includes Shakespearean and non-Shakespearean plays performed on 3 stages.

 

The Elizabethan Theatre is an outdoor theatre. Each season, 3 different plays are offered in this theatre.

Redding, California

We woke up early on Saturday and drove 45 minutes north to Redding. Redding is a city of nearly 90,000 with the Sacramento River running through it. It's famous for the Sundial Bridge, which was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The bridge was completed in 2004 and links the north and south campus of Turtle Bay Exploration Park.

 

The Sundial Bridge is 700 feet in length and spans the Sacramento River without touching it. It's for pedestrians and bicyclists only.

 

There are gorgeous views of the river and nearby mountains.

 

 

The water is so clear you can see the bottom.

Los Montes, Corning

We turned to Yelp to help us decide where to eat in Corning. There were 2 options: Los Montes Mexican or a pizza place. We decided to give Los Montes a try and we were not disappointed.

 

Los Montes is located just 2 blocks down the street from the Super 8. It's at 1728 Solano Street.

 

Order at the counter, grab your number and find a table. Chips & Salsa are delivered to the table. The chips are warm and the salsa was delicious.

 

Tilapia Fish Taco--3 for $5.25. This wasn't what I was expecting but it had a nice flavor.

 

Chicken, Carnitas and Carne Asada tacos--$1.35 for the corn tacos, $1.60 for the crunchy taco. These were okay.

 

Chile Rellenos--$9.99. This was the best of the evening. The chile rellenos were huge and there were 2 of them. They were stuffed with cheese and the chile was mild and flavorful. The Mexican rice was the best rice I have had--so delicious and perfectly cooked.

Road Trip

Over the Labor Day weekend, we took a road trip to Bend, Oregon. We left after work on Friday and got as far as Corning, California.

Have you ever heard of Corning? It's a tiny, 1-street downtown with a population of 7500, just 2 hours north of Sacramento. It's the "Olive City," with the world's largest olive cannery. It also is home to Sunsweet prunes.

 

The Olive Pit is advertised for miles on Hwy 5. We had to stop and look. It's a store with every kind of green olives imaginable. There are ones stuffed with the usual garlic and almonds but there were also ones stuffed with anchovies (my favorite), blue cheese and jalapeno. They also have olive oil, muffaleta mix and balsamic vinegar. The best part of it were all the samples available. It's worth a quick 15-minute stop if you're passing through and like olives.

 

 

Directly across the street was a Super 8 motel. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable and air conditioning worked. It was 85 degrees at 8 pm so that came in very handy. There is a free continental breakfast in the morning with make-you-own waffles.

 

 

They even had a tiny pool.

Carl's Junior

I have a confession. Every once in a while, I have a craving for fried zucchini and I love the ones at Carl's Junior. I love the tasty breading and the ranch dressing. There's nothing like a hot, crispy zucchini!
