The evening before the big event, there were clouds that appeared and we hoped by the time we woke up they would be gone. It did make for a dramatic sunset.
On Monday, 8/21/2017, it was a beautiful day in Madras. The sky was clear and there was not too much smoke from the local fires. The eclipse started at 9:06 am and totality was at 10:19 am. Totality lasted 2 min 2 sec.
Prior to totality in Madras, you could see the shadow over Mt. Jefferson.
After the shadow passed, you could see Mt. Jefferson again.
It was a disaster to leave Madras. Leaving the campsite took 4 hours and it took 15 hours to drive from Madras to Redding, a drive that normally takes 5 hours. Even with all the hassles with traffic, totality was worth seeing. I highly recommend it.
Next totality will be visible in Chile & Argentina 7/2/2019, although there is a 50% chance of cloud cover. The next visible totality in the US is 2024.
