The Testaccio Market is a covered marketplace with stalls selling fruits, vegetables and prepared foods. It's closed on Sundays. Arrive before 12:30pm, when the locals seem to come for lunch.
The strawberries were €1.50 per basket and were so sweet.
You could also find zucchini blossoms for €1.99/kg.
At La Prosciutteria di Enzo e Lina, you can buy prosciutto, other cured meats and house made mozzarella.
We got 3 different kinds of prosciutto--Prosciutto Montagna (€5.40 for 300g--roughly 3/4 lb), Prosciutto Norcia (€2.40/100g) and Prosciutto al Pepe Rosa (€2.60/100g). We also purchased a slice of mozzarella (€16.50/100g). The prosciutto were delicious and I must admit I couldn't detect much of a difference. The mozzarella was again rubbery. Maybe, that's the way Italian mozzarella is supposed to be.
The next stall we visited was Mordi & Vai, which specializes in sandwiches.
We got Trippa alla Romana (tripe prepared Roman style with tomato sauce, celery, carrot, onion, pecorino cheese & mint)--€4.50 and Alesso di Scottona (slow cooked tender beef with chicory)--€4.50.
Mordi & Vai does have a few tables but you can only eat items purchased at this stall.
There was a huge line at Altro so we got in line. They had freshly prepared pasta and gnocchi.
I ordered the Gnocco with Pomodoro e Basilico--€4. The sauce was good but the gnocco was very mushy and I thought it was overcooked. Apparently, this is the way Romans like it.
After making your purchase, head to the center of the market, where there are tables. I didn't know about the ancient Roman road with broken shards of broken amphora under it. I'll have to look for it the next time I go.
