A Walk Through Pisa

After returning from Lucca, we got off at the Stazione Pisa Centrale and followed Rick Steves' 1-hour walking tour..

From the central train station, walk north.

The Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is a circular square with a parking lot underneath it. This is where the TI is located.

The piazza is dominated by who else but Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a united Italy in the late 1800s.

At the top of the square, you'll find Keith Haring's mural "Tuttomondo," which he painted in 1989.

Continue north on the pedestrianized Corso Italia to find the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine.

In front of the church is a statue of Nicola Pisano, an Italian sculptor considered to be the founder of modern sculpture.

Nearby is a loggia built under Medici. It resembles the market in Florence.

Cross the Arno River on the Ponte di Mezzo and continue north.

Piazza Garibaldi is just north of the Arno River. Garibaldi was the leader of the unification movement that led to Italian Independence in 1860.

From the Piazza Garibaldi, continue north on the arcaded shopping street Borgo Stretto.

The Church of St. Michael is to the right of Borgo Stretto and was built on the site of a Roman temple.

Continuing north, you'll pass Largo Ciro Menotti, a 1960 reconstruction built on the site of a bomb site.

Further north is the Piazza dei Cavalieri, Pisa's historic center.

The frescoes on the square's buildings reflect Pisa's glory under the Medici.

The Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri is just off Piazza Cavaleiri.

The interior is ornate and the ceiling.is impressive.

High altar was designed and sculpted by Foggini.

Inside the church, you'll find "Entombment di Santo Stefano by Vasari.

Outside in the piazza, you'll find a statue of Cosimo I de' Medici, the Florentine who ruled Pisa in the 16th century. The dolphin he stands on reminded all that the Florentine navy controlled the sea.

The Old Clock in the square.

The buildings in the square are now part of the University of Pisa.
