Vernazza

From Pisa, we took the train to Vernazza to start the Cinque Terre portion of our trip. The ride took 1 1/2 hours and cost €11.50. The Cinque Terre are 5 towns situated along 6 miles of the Italian Riviera. The isolated towns are linked by trails, trains and boats. Starting from the south, the towns are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso.

Peak season is May, June and September. It's hot in July and August. April and October are nice times to visit.

We chose Vernazza as our home base and spent 3 nights there. It's a town of 500 but there are good tourist amenities. The harbor scenery is dramatic.

From the train station, walk uphill.

At the end of the road, you'll find a memorial to those killed in WWI and WWII.

At the corner, you'll find Millstone Square. Vernazza's water mill was once powered by the stream which goes underground here.

Vernazza is local dialect for "Little Venice" when the town had a string of tiny bridges that crossed the stream.

Turn around and head downhill. The main road goes from the train station down to the sea.

The Chapel of Santa Marta is a small stone chapel where mass is celebrated on special Sundays.

In town, you'll find reminders of the flood of 2011 when 22 inches of rain fell within 4 hours. Vernazza was buried under 10 feet of mud and left without water, electricity and phone connections.

Even though it's a touristy town, you'll find signs of local life.

Gelateria Vernazza is located on Via Roma 13 and was rated the #1 Gelateria in town.

The Pistacchio, Limone and Chocolate were quite good.

Nearby, you'll find a stone arch blasted away by the 2011 flood. Walk through to the other side to find the "New Beach."

Back on the main road, you'll reach the harbor.

The road ends at Piazza Marconi, the harbor square.

View from the end of the breakwater.

Vernazza's harborfront church--Santa Margherita di Antiochia Church.

The inside of the church is plain.

Bird's-eye view of Vernazza and a passing train.

Market day in Vernazza is on Tuesdays.
