Corniglia

We tried to hike to Monterosso the next day but the trail was closed. Instead, we chose to go to Corniglia--a 2-hour hike. Be sure you have a Cinque Terre Trekking Card, which costs €7.50 for one day or €14.50 for 2 days.

The trail from Vernazza to Corniglia is steep--climbing from sea level to 690 feet.

You can check the local Tourist Info board to see which trails are open.

Corniglia is the only village not on the water.

Coming into town, you'll find a grape press. Corniglia was know for it's wine since ancient times. It's said that vases of Corniglia wine were found in Pompei.

Before arriving in town, you'll find the Chiesa di San Pietro.

The exterior is plain but the interior is very ornate. Not exactly what I thought would be found in a town of 240.

On the main street Via Fieschi, you'll find several gelateria. Rick Steves liked Alberto Gelateria at #74, so we stopped there.

We tried the Honey, Lemon & Basil--€2.80. Interesting flavors and very good.

Nearby, you'll find Enotica il Pirun. In this wine shop, you can try drinking wine from a pirun, a wine pitcher designed to aerate the wine as you squirt it into your mouth. Be careful to avoid dribbling.

Walking further, you'll find Largo Taragio with the Oratory of Santa Caterina. The Largo Taragio is the main square with a WWI memorial and the town well. The oratory nearby is a small chapel for private worship.

Behind the oraatory is a clearing used by the local children as a makeshift soccer field.
