Portofino & Santa Margherita Ligure

We decided to visit Portofino and took the train from the Stazione di Genova Brignole to Santa Margherita Ligure (18 min ride).

After arriving at the train station in Santa Margherita, we took the stairs to the waterfront and walked along the coast. We came upon Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where buses depart for Portofino.

Instead of taking the bus, we walked to Portofino. The path along the coast is an easy 1-hour walk.

Near the waterfront in Santa Margherita Ligure, you'll come upon a statue of Vittorio Emmanuele II in the Piazza Martiri della Liberta.

Walk out on the pier towards the ferry terminal and you'll find a statue of the Santa Margherita Virgin Martyr, who protects the harbor.

Before leaving Santa Margherita Ligure, you'll find a 16th century castle. It is closed to visitors.

As you walk, look up to find beautiful villas.

The path to Portofino is flat and paved.

It is also known as the Passeggiata dei Baci (walk of kisses).

In Portofino, you'll arrive in the Piazza Martiri dell'Olivetta.

It faces the well protected natural harbor.

The harbor is crowded with boats.

Walk around the small town. Pick up some baked goods from a "panificio" (bakery).

The Church of San Martino is the main church in Portofino and located in the heart of the town.

The interior is ornate.

High on a hill, the Church of San Giorgio looks out over the ocean.

We took the boat back to Santa Margherita--€7 each. Buy tickets at the kiosk in the harbor and get in line. The ride is 15 minutes long.

Portofino is so beautiful from the sea.

On the ride back to Santa Margherita, if you look close, you can see the hiking trail.

Arriving in the harbor in Santa Margherita Ligure.

A short walk from the pier is the Basilica of Santa Margherita Ligure

The altar is typical of 17th century Ligurian altars--it's shaped like a boat.

Nearby is Largo Antonio Giusti.

In the square, you'll find Gelateria Centrale, which serves pinguino, a cone of gelato dipped in chocolate.

We opted for a cup of gelato instead.

After our gelato snack, we took the train back to Genova Brignole--a 14-minute ride.
