Cluj Napoca

After returning from Banffy Castle, we toured Cluj Napoca, Romania's 2nd largest city (after Bucharest).

We passed by "Glory to the Romanian Soldier" on our way to Piata Unirii. The monument is located in Avram Iancu Square.

The monument is dedicated to the memory of those who sacrificed themselves for their country--whether in defense, unity or for national independence.

The statue is in front of the Theotokos Cathedral, the most famous Romanian Orthodox cathedral in Cluj Napoca. The cathedral was inspired by the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

We stepped inside and found a wedding ceremony. There is no seating so guests stand for the ceremony.

Colorful frescoes decorate the walls.

The cathedral must host many weddings. There was another wedding party waiting outside.

The National Opera House sits across the street from the cathedral.

Cluj Napoca was given a copy of the Capitoline Wolf by Rome in 1921. It represents the Latin origin of its inhabitants.

St. Michael's Church in Piata Unirii is the 2nd largest Gothic church in Romania (after the Black Church in Brasov). Unfortunately, it was closed during our visit.

Statue of Matthias Corvin, a 15th century Hungarian king, sits in front of the church.

The Botanical Garden is a 15-minute walk south of the Old Town. Admission is 10 lei ($2.33). The garden hosts over 10,000 plants.

In mid September, there were still beautiful flowers in bloom.

There is a butterfly habitat in the garden.

Climb the Water Tower for a nice view over the gardens.

Visit the Japanese Garden in the park.

There are several greenhouses. This one holds aquatic plants, including these giant lily pads.
