Free Walking Tour Cluj Napoca

In Cluj, we took another Free Walking Tour. We met at 6 pm in Piata Unirii in front of the Corvin Statue. The 2-hour tour told the history of Cluj.

The Carolina Obelisk is located in Museum Square. It was built to commemorate the visit by Austrian Emperor Francis I and his wife Carolina Augusta in 1817.

At the base, there are 4 eagles with laurels in their beaks.

One of the bas reliefs at the base depicts the visit by the Emperor and his wife to the hospital, offering money to the poor.

The house where Matthias Corvinus was born is oddly shaped and not symmetrical. The story goes that the owner was exempt from paying property taxes. His neighbors made a deal with him to combine their houses with his so they too could avoid taxes.
