Curtea de Arges

Our next stop was Curtea de Arges, 30 minutes south of Poienari Castle.

Curtea de Arges' Cathedral and Monastery is considered one of the country's most important sights and serves as a royal mausoleum.

The graves of Carol II (who ruled Romania from 1930-1940) & his brother Prince Mircea are buried here. Prince Mircea died at the age of 3 from typhoid fever.

The cathedral on the grounds of the monastery is Moorish in appearance.

Inside, you'll find the burial sites of Carol I and his wife Elisabeth.

On the other side of the entrance are King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie.

The grounds are peaceful and include many flower stands.

The monastery is large and there are multiple buildings onsite.

The other important sight in town is the Princely Court. Curtea de Arges was an early capital of Wallachia.

The main sight in the Princely Court is St. Nicholas Church. It also functions as burial tombs of some early rulers.

The church dates from the 1300s and many of the frescoes inside are originals.

A statue of Basarab I, the first independent ruler of Wallachia, stands nearby. It was during his reign that St. Nicholas was constructed.
