Pitesti

From La Strada, it was a short walk to the pedestrian zone.

We passed by Parcul 1907 and watched retirees play chess. It's nice that the tables are sheltered.

The Arges County Museum, which is housed in an 1890s palace, sits across the street from the park.

There is a central pedestrianized street lined with shops, restaurants and museums.

Just in front of the City Hall, you'll find an outdoor movie area.

The pedestrian zone is huge and there are concrete pavers everywhere. It would've been better with some green space.

Pitesti is known for a re-education prison. Mind control experiments were conducted here in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The memorial is located at Strada Victoriei 24, a 15-minute walk from the center of town.

Behind the building, you'll find stories of the prisoners who were detained here.

You can only tour the prison with a guide but on the evening we visited, there was a special event. We walked in and wandered around by ourselves. The exhibits were sobering and gruesome in some parts. This was one of the less gruesome pieces.
