Bagdad Cafe

Less than 1/2 hour from Barstow, you'll find the Bagdad Cafe in Newberry Springs.

The original cafe was in the town of Bagdad, 52 miles east of Newberry Springs. The cafe and town were abandoned when I-40 was completed. The current Bagdad Cafe was established when filming for the movie took place in the Sidewinder Cafe. The owners kept the name Bagdad Cafe after filming ended.

The cafe had been closed since Covid began and just opened a few days before our visit. They weren't serving food yet but the chef encouraged us to come in and take a look.

We found out Route 66 is very popular with Europeans and they weren't anticipating a big season with the travel restrictions.

The interior is eclectic.

The "Bagdad Cafe" was a English-speaking German film released in 1987. It tells the story of two women who separated from their husbands and meet in a truck stop/motel in the Mojave Desert.
