Rich Table

We celebrated a 50th birthday. There was a group of 7 of us and we were able to get a reservation at Rich Table in San Francisco. We had to reserve a month in advance.

Rich Table is located at 199 Gough Street (corner of Oak). There was free street parking on a Saturday night. Since we had a table of more than 6, we were required to get the Family Style menu. Dinner was $80 per person, 20% gratuity was automatically added and there was a 4% surcharge to pay for the employee's health care (mandated by SF ordinance).

Corkage is $30 per bottle. One corkage is waived for every bottle of wine purchased.

Dried Porcini Doughnuts, Raclette Cheese. This was delicious if you got one of the doughnuts that was dusted with dried porcini powder. If you got one that was not dusted, it tasted like fried dough. The raclette cheese was delicious with it.

Burrata, Figs, Early Girl Tomato, Pizza Crust. The burrata cheese was very creamy and it had a nice sauce on the bottom that I couldn't figure out. It was a spicy tomato mix. I couldn't find the pizza crust.

Heirloom Tomato, Pimento Cheese, Bacon Jam, Honey. I loved the pimento cheese with this and really liked the bacon crumble.

Melon, Lime, Honey, Togarashi

Brandade Hushpuppies, Douglas Fir Tartar. The fir was very subtle.

Douglas Fir Levain, House Cultured Butter. This was a heavy bread and I couldn't really taste the fir.

Tajarin, House Cultured Butter, Nutritional Yeast, Kale. I was hesitant about this dish because nutritional yeast just doesn't sound appetizing. It turned out to be my favorite pasta dish. To me, it tasted like carbonara.

Spaghetti, Aged Beef, Caramelized Onion, Dijonaise. This had very deep flavor but was too salty.

Rigatoni, Cherry Tomato, Sea Urchin Butter, Shiso. The sea urchin was very subtle as was the shiso.

Cauliflower Vindaloo, Pommes Aligot, Pickled Mustard Seeds. This was prepared well. Cooked through without being mushy and I really liked the pickled mustard seeds.

King Salmon, Creamed Corn, Turnip, Tare Vinaigrette. I liked the salmon. It was just slightly rare in the center, which is the way salmon should be prepared.

NY Strip Steak Char Siu, Broccoli, Flavor King Pluot. The meat was very flavorful but it wasn't char siu. I liked the slight sweetness from the pluot.

Salted Chocolate Sable, Milk Ice Cream, Mint Chocolate Ganache. This was my favorite dessert. I liked the minty chocolate ganache with the saltiness of the sable.

Melon Granite, Cucumber Sherbet, Black Sesame

Coconut Panna Cotta, Lime Crumble, Toasted Meringue. I'm not a panna cotta fan but this was very smooth and I liked the crunchiness of the lime crumble with the smoothness.

We brought a bottle of 1999 Joseph Phelps Insignia and a 1997 Opus One. The Insignia was amazing but the Opus One had a little tannin left in it. It could age even more.

Overall, this was a very nice meal. We all left full and the $80 price tag was just right.
