Route of the Ancient Abbeys

From Rouen to Honfleur, follow the Route of the Ancient Abbeys.

Twenty minutes west of Rouen, on Route D-982, you'll find the Abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville.

Step inside for a quick look at this Romanesque Church.

There is a restaurant across the street, if you didn't have lunch in Rouen.

Continue another 20 minutes on D-982 to the Abbaye de Jumieges. It's worth a stop to look at this Benedictine abbey. Admission is €6.50.

This was Normandy's largest abbey but it was destroyed during the French Revolution. There is no roof and some of the walls are missing. Be sure to bring your smart phone. You can use the free wifi in the gift shop and download a free app. Stand on the markers in the abbey, hold your phone up and a 3-D recreation of the original abbey appears. The app also includes an audio guide.

The grounds are expansive. Plan on spending 1-1 1/2 hours.

Just a short distance from the abbey, you can cross the Seine on a free car ferry. Service is fairly frequent and the crossing takes just a few minutes.

Take the A-13 (€5.50 toll) to Honfleur. You'll see the Pont de Normandie (Normandy Bridge) as you near Honfleur. It connects Le Havre to Honfleur.
