Norwegian Air & FCO (Rome)

I got a fantastic flight deal on Norwegian Air. Non-stop OAK to FCO for $568 roundtrip and that included purchasing seat assignments and insurance.

The seats in Rows 6 & 7 were $45. What a coup. They were the first row in economy and there was just as much leg room as in Premium Economy. We didn't get a leg rest and instead of 2-3-2 configuration, we were 3-3-3 but hey we got an empty seat between us and we could spread out. The only downside is that you don't have a place to store your personal item so without the empty seat between us, it would have been hard.

Norwegian charges for everything. You can bring on a carry-on and a personal item but both have to weigh less than 10 kg combined. At OAK, they weighed everything but did allow you to go 1 kg over. At FCO, they only weighed your carry-on, if it looked large.

If you want a meal, it'll cost you. If you want drinks, it'll cost you. Even water is a charge--$3 for 500 ml.

No pillows, no blankets and no earbuds. A travel blanket is $5 and earbuds are $3 if you forget to bring your own. If you have a late model iPhone, your earbuds won't work.

Once you arrive at FCO, the best options for getting into the city are:
1) take the train. Follow the signs marked TRENI for the Leonardo Express. It's a 32-minute non-stop ride to Stazione Termini (arrive on Track 22), convenient if you're staying near the central train station. It costs €14--buy tickets from the machine near the tracks and don't forget to validate it.
2) take a Taxi. Taxis cost a flat €48 to anywhere within the Aurelian walls in Rome. Make sure you go to the Taxi stand and don't accept any offers from hawkers as you exit customs. Also make sure to get into a Rome Taxi and not a Fiumcino Taxi. The Rome Taxis are white with red lettering and have a sign on the door indicating €48 to the center of Rome. Fare is for up to 4 passengers and includes luggage. No official tipping for cabs, just round up.
