Alba

The Alba International White Truffle Fair will be October 6 to November 18 this year. White and black truffle are sold by the local purveyors. Go for the white truffle--much more flavorful. The Baccanale del Tartufo on October 20-21 is a fair with a Middle Age theme. In 2010, we saw it being set up and wished we could have stayed. The old town of Alba was the perfect backdrop for the fair.

One of the best meals we had on the trip was found by accident. We asked at the agriturismo where we stayed where to go for lunch. He started listing a few restaurants. I asked where the locals went and he reached down and grabbed a business card from a private stash. He told us the Mira Langhe was fabulous but difficult to find. When we arrived in the deserted town at the top of a hill, we saw the hotel named Mira Langhe. We walked in and there was a little girl at the reception desk. We asked where to "mangia" and she pointed to the back of the hotel. We didn't know what to expect but followed the little girl's directions. We were shocked to find a large, well lit room at the back, filled with Italians. The waitress spoke little English but managed to ask how hungry we were. She started bringing food. I noticed that no one had a menu and everyone was eating the same things. We figured it must be a set menu and enjoyed what was brought.

I love Italian rolls. They're crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.

Poached pears with a cheese I couldn't identify drizzled with balsamic vinegar.

Beef tartare with black truffles.

Cheese tart.

Tallarine with ragu and agnolotti with butter sauce.

Roast pork and stewed boar with potatoes and carrots.

Assorted dessert.
