Bodega

On the 4th of July, we drove to Bodega Bay. On the way, we stopped in Sebastopol to have breakfast. I had read good things about Hole in the Wall Restaurant, located at 972 Gravenstein Highway, Suite 100.

The restaurant is tucked in a corner of a retail mall. Facing Starbucks, look towards 2:00 and you'll see the restaurant. It's easy to miss.

The Hole in the Wall Scramble--2 eggs lightly scrambled with spinach, roasted red bell peppers, caramelized onions, honey ham and medium sharp cheddar, served with country fried potatoes and a house-made biscuit or toast--$8.25. I liked the dish, especially the spinach in the eggs but it was oversalted. I'm not a fan of potatoes but my 5-year-old nephew ate it up. The biscuit was moist, multi-layered but too crispy on the outside.

Buttermilk Pancake, served with fresh fruit and maple syrup--nothing out of the ordinary--$2.75.

Short Rib Hash & Eggs--braised all-natural Angus short rib mixed with potatoes, onions and red bell peppers topped with two poached eggs, served with a house-made biscuit or toast--$9.75. The eggs were poached just right but the short rib was again too salty.

Biscuits & Sausage Gravy--$6.50. This was a typical biscuit and gravy with large chunks of sausages. The dish was too salty and nothing special. It wasn't worth the cholesterol.

Add two eggs any style and country fried potatoes to the Biscuits and Gravy--$2.75. I loved the eggs. They were light and fluffy. I wish I knew how to make eggs so fluffy.

They were out of mushrooms on the day we visited. I might go back and try the Biscuits with Gourmet Mushroom Gravy to see if it's worth the cholesterol. I will ask for low sodium next time though.

After breakfast, we continued to Bodega. We wanted to see the filming locales for Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds."

Inside the Bodega Country Store--"The Birds" memorabilia corner. This is a mini mart but it had clam chowder with smoked clams. Since we had just eaten, we didn't try it.

The Tides Wharf Restaurant & Bar in Bodega Bay. Another locale for the movie. There is a restaurant and a snack bar. We had tried the restaurant previously and the view of the bay is nice. Lunch was typical seafood and fish & chips but nothing special.
