Iceland in January

We weren't about to let being homeless prevent us from a scheduled vacation so off we went to Iceland.

We flew WOW air. WOW is no-frills but it is a non-stop, less-than-8-hour flight from SFO to KEF (Reykjavik). Who cares if there is no entertainment onboard, no pillows nor blankets and you have to pay for food & drinks (even water) when the RT ticket is $300? We chose seats for an additional $12 each leg and paid for a carry-on for $50 each leg. At first we thought the seats didn't recline until we discovered the bar under the seat that controlled reclining.

We even got to see the aurora en route.

KEF is a very small airport and clearing customs took all of 5 minutes. We were the first scheduled flight to arrive and even arrived early--it was 3:35am. We went to Duty Free and bought some alcohol--much less expensive than buying it in town.

I had booked the Flybus transfer into town at www.viator.com for $22/person. The bus left 45 minutes after we arrived. It took a little longer than the advertised 45 minutes to get into town because we made a couple stops to drop off passengers The bus station for Flybus is the BSI station, close to the center of town. There are lockers to store your luggage but it will cost 890 ISK for a medium locker (37cm W x 47cm H x 70cm D) and 1290 ISK for a large locker (42cm W x 64cm H x 95cm D). You can only open it once but it is good for 24 hours.

It was a 10-minute walk to the Nordurey Guesthouse, where I had booked a room so we could get a few hours sleep. I wished I had reserved our apartment for the night prior to arrival so we could get in at 6 am.
