Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

From the Nijo castle, we headed to the Golden Pavilion and came upon the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. This is one of the most important shrines dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and politician who is associated with Tenjin, the god of education. That explains why the temple was crowded with students. They come here to pray for successes in their studies.

There was no entrance fee.

Amulets to prevent misfortune and to protect against danger. The amulet for passing an exam is   Y1000. Talk about taking advantage of fears.

Students line up to ring the bell and pray for success.

You can also write your wishes on a piece of paper and tie it to the ropes.

Not sure what the cows represented but they were everywhere on the temple grounds.
