An Overnight Trip to San Francisco

I found a great Hotwire hotel deal and booked a night in San Francisco. We rarely get to tour the city through tourist eyes.

From our hotel, we walked past the Transamerica Pyramid

through Little Italy.

One of my favorites is Liguria Bakery. They open Tue-Fri at 8am, Saturdays at 7am and closes when they sell out.

They only sell focaccia. Cost is $4.50 to $5.50 for a large slab. Bring cash.

From Little Italy, cross Columbus Avenue to reach Saints Peter & Paul Church on Washington Square.

Mama's is located nearby and is another of my favorites. It's open Tue-Sun from 8am-3pm. Try their crab benedict if it's available.

From Washington Square, walk to Coit Tower for sunset.

Another fun thing to do is to walk through Chinatown. You'll find the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory on Ross Alley. Step inside and watch the ladies making fortune cookies by hand. If you take a picture, it'll cost $0.50.

You can write your own fortune and have it wrapped inside a cookie. You get to take it home in an adorable tiny takeout container. Cost is $1. You can also buy pre made bags of fortune cookies. These are good cookies.

The East West Bank at 743 Washington started as the Chinese Telephone Exchange. Callers often asked for people by name because it was rude to refer to them only by their phone number. The operators had to know the numbers of subscribers by name, address and occupation.

The Tien Hou Temple at 125 Waverly Place on the top floor is dedicated to the Goddess of Heaven.

Old St. Mary's Cathedral is located on Grant & California. It was the first Church built as a cathedral in California. The granite for the foundation came from China.

Across the street is St. Mary's Square where you'll find a statue of Sun Yat-Sen, the founding father of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

From the square, you can see SF's "Death Star."

The Chinatown Gate separates Chinatown from Union Square. There are 2 lions that guard the gate. The female lion has a baby and the male lion has a ball.
