The Dam that Controls the Water

Because of a buildup of silt, Mont-St-Michel was gradually being connected to the mainland.

To prevent this, a large dam was built to control the water.  It's situated on the Couesnon River, near the Hotel de la Digue.

In low tide, water is released to push the sand away from the island.

You can watch the tide come in, making Mont-St-Michel an island.

There is a sign warning you if the causeway will be completely submerged under water.
