A Day Trip to Oxford

Oxford makes a good day trip from London.

It was easy to take the Oxford Tube bus from Notting Hill Gate Station near our hotel to Oxford. It was £15/person for a return ticket. If you have up to 3 adults and 2 children, it's £42 for the group for a return ticket. The bus ride took 1 1/2 hours.

In Oxford, the bus drops you off across the street from the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin. The University Church has been the official church of Oxford University since the 1200s.

Step inside to look at the Great West Window.

You can sign up for a 2-hour walking tour for £17. It is possible to walk around on your own but you may have difficulty getting into some of the buildings.

The Radcliffe Camera is nearby and houses the Radcliffe Science Library.

Oxford is divided into 39 colleges. This is All Souls College, located across the street from the Radcliffe Camera. Its strengths include the humanities and social & theoretical sciences. The public is welcome to visit the College Front and Great Quadrangle and Chapel weekdays and Sundays from 2-4 pm free of charge when the college is open.

The Bridge of Sighs, also known as Hertford Bridge, is a skyway that connects 2 parts of Hertford College over New College Lane. The college is open to visitors from 9am-5pm and you can walk over the bridge. No need to book in advance.

The Sheldonian Theatre where students matriculate and graduate. You can visit on your own for £3.80 or take a guided tour for £8.

Oxford's Museum of Natural History is located in an impressive building. It's open daily from 10am-5pm and admission is free.

There are skeletons

and stuffed prehistoric-looking birds. This is a shoebill stork.

In the back of the Museum of Natural History, you'll find the Pitt Rivers Museum. The Pitt Rivers Museum owns nearly 500,000 archaeologic and ethnographic pieces.

This was one of my favorites--an exhibit of a wooden ark with pairs of animals.

We were fortunate to get a tour of Brasenose College. The public can visit for £2.

The Old Quad within the college.

The Medieval Kitchen wing with a deer park (and no deer).

The Chapel inside the college.

The Rotunda

The Student Dining Room in Brasenose was reminiscent of Harry Potter.

After Brasenose, we toured the The Watson Library, with its exhibits of maps. This was a modern map of Brexit.

The Bodleian Library is the main research library at Oxford and contains over 12 million items.

The Divinity School in Bodleian Library was used as a filming site for a Harry Potter movie. It's the Hogwarts Infirmary.

Next to the Bodleian Library is Exeter College, the 4th oldest college in Oxford.

The Chapel at Exeter College.

Evensong takes place on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Covered Market in Oxford has been open since 1774.

There are stalls selling fruit & vegetables and fresh meat, including birds. It's most active on Sundays.

We went to Magdalen College to attend Evensong at 6 pm. Arrive after 5:50 pm. We were there in November and it was already dark when we arrived for Evensong. I wish we could have seen the deer park.
