Eguisheim

The next morning, we toured Eguisheim.

Eguisheim is one of the "Most Beautiful Villages" in France. This is an association that was created in 1982 to promote small and picturesque villages in France. In 2015, there were 155 such villages. Eguisheim is located just 7 km southwest of Colmar.

Eguisheim is a circular town and the Grand Rue bisects it. Place du Chateaux is in the center of town, on Grand Rue.

On Place du Chateaux is a statue of Pope Leo IX, the only Alsatian pope. He was born in 1002 and was only pope for 5 years.

Rue du Rempart Sud (the portion of the ring road south of Grand Rue), along with Rue du Rempart Nord (the portion north of Grand Rue), is the circular road that rings the town.

13th-17th century houses line the road on the left and their barns are on the right. Nowadays, the barns have been converted into residences.

Wine is a big part of the town and include the Grand Crus of Eichberg & Pfersigberg.
