Norwegian Air

We flew on Norwegian Air. It's a low-cost carrier that has a non-stop flight from Oakland to Oslo. There is one flight a day, leaving OAK at 8 pm, arriving at Oslo's Gardermoen airport at 2:30 pm. Our return flight was from Kirkenes to OAK, with a stop in Oslo. Total roundtrip cost in May was $710.

Can't beat the price but it is a no-frills airline. You are allowed a 10 kg (22 lb) carry-on bag and it can't be larger than 55 x 40 x 23 cm. They do weigh your bag and if it passes, you get a yellow "Cabin" tag for your bag. If you have to check in a bag, the cost depends on where you're going and if it is high or low season.

If you want to reserve a seat and purchased a "Low Fare" ticket, it'll cost $45 each way. Otherwise, you're assigned a seat at the airport. Be ready to sit in the middle.

You are served no meals and no drinks, not even water. You can pre-order meals, purchase them onboard or bring your own. We picked up sushi at a local Japanese grocery store and had a much better meal than your typical airplane food.

The flight from OAK to Oslo was on a 787 Dreamliner. The Dreamliner is fuel-efficient and supposed to require less travel time. Our flight from OAK to Oslo was just over 9 hours.

The seats were a little roomier than on United or American but not as comfortable as Turkish Air. The windows were larger and there was "mood lighting" to cause less jet lag. Not sure how that worked.

Each seat had an entertainment system with movies, TV shows and games. A friend traveling with us noted that the movies were the same after 3 months.

There's supposed to be less noise because of noise reducing material but you still can't quiet the screeching kid sitting next to you.

The seat configuration was 3-3-3. If you purchased a Premium ticket, the seating was 2-3-2 and you got a foot rest. You also got more luggage allowance, pre-flight drinks and meals on board.

Overall, the flight was fine and for the price and the non-stop convenience, it was the way to go to Norway from the Bay area.
