Crossing the Arctic Circle

The Arctic Circle is the northernmost of the 5 major latitude circles that mark maps of the earth. At the Arctic Circle, the sun can remain above or below the horizon for 24 hours, hence the term "land of the midnight sun."

Although the Arctic Circle is an invisible border, there is a globe on Vikingen Island that marks it.

When you cross the Arctic Circle, there is a ceremony to celebrate the crossing. It's a chilly ceremony--ice water is poured down your back.

After crossing the Arctic Circle, our next port of call was Ornes. We were only there for 15 minutes.

Ornes is a beautiful little village with spectacular mountain scenery.
