Shifen

Every February, the famous Sky Lantern Festival takes place in Pingxi. Thousands write their wishes on paper lanterns and send them skyward in the hopes of having their wishes fulfilled. If you're in Taiwan at other times, you can do the same in Shifen.

Write your special wish on a paper lantern, light it and send it skyward. As it floats away, repeat the same wish to yourself.

The lanterns are NT$150 ($4.30) for 1 color, NT$200 ($5.75) for 4 colors and NT$350 ($10) for 8 colors. Each color represents a different wish: yellow for wealth, blue for career, purple for studying, white for the future, orange for love & marriage, green for success, pink for bliss and red for health. Personally, I think buying a 4 color lantern is plenty of good wishes. Don't worry about the frames of the lanterns creating an environmental waste. Locals are encouraged to find the frames and return them for a cash reward.

The lanterns are set off from the train track in the center of Shifen Old Town.

Walk to the end of the village to see the Jing-An Suspension Bridge. If there are too many people on the bridge, it starts to swing.

We found ice cream, cilantro and peanut brittle rolls again. NT$40 ($1.15) for 1, NT$100 ($2.85) for 3.

Continue walking near the tracks to find the train station.

The Pingxi Line is one of 3 narrow-gauge railway still in operation. Originally, they were built to transport coal, gold, copper and building materials. Nowadays, they transport villagers, vendors and visitors. The Pingxi Line starts in eastern Keelung city and extends to Jingtong, a 45-minute ride.

The Jingtong Police Station nearby is shaped like a lantern and lit up at night.

Traveling from Taipei to Jiufen and Shifen is possible by public transportation (instructions can be found on this blog post: https://eternalarrival.com/travel-blog/asia/taiwan/shifen-to-jiufen/) but it can take a long time. You can rent a car and driver or take a shuttle: https://www.klook.com/activity/2093-jiufen-shuttle-bus-ximen-taipei/?aid=4731&utm_medium=affiliate-alwayson&utm_source=non-network&utm_campaign=4731
