Tim Ho Wan

Tim Ho Wan has been billed as the least expensive Michelin-starred restaurant in the world. It's a dim sum place with 1 Michelin Star. There are numerous locations all over Hong Kong (and all over the world).

Our first experience was in the IFC building, in the lower level, near the Airport Express train. This is very convenient for those who have a short layover and take the Airport Express into town but it's not one of the locations awarded a Michelin Star. There wasn't much of a wait when we arrived at 10:30am on a Monday morning.

Shrimp Dumpling--HK$34. This was good but not out of this world.

Tim Ho Wan is famous for Baked Bun with BBQ Pork--HK$23. This is definitely the best pork buns I have ever had. The filling is delicious but the pineapple-bun coating on top is what makes it special.

Pan Fried Turnip Cake--HK$18. This was served lukewarm, not what would be acceptable by Michelin.

Steamed Rice Rolls with Shrimp & Chives--HK$$33. This was bland even after splashing with sweet soy sauce and overall disappointing.

We tried a different Tim Ho Wan the next day.

The 2nd Tim Ho Wan that was opened in Hong Kong is located in Sham Shui Po at 9-11 Fuk Wing Street. This one was awarded a Micheline Star. There was no wait when we arrived at 10:30am on a Tuesday.

When we sat down, a bowl was brought to the table. I watched everyone pour hot tea over their chopsticks and rinse their teacup over the bowl so we did the same. The bowl was then taken away. We saw a small cockroach scurry across our table. I wonder if Michelin knows about the utensil rinsing and the cockroach?

Steamed Pork Dumpling with Shrimp--HK$28. Interestingly, this place was cheaper than the location in the IFC. The dumplings were good but again not out of this world.

The Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce were delicious though--HK$18. They were tender but the skin still had substance and didn't fall apart. Best chicken feet I've ever had.

We had the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork again--HK$20. This was even better than the ones yesterday. The topping was a little more crunchy.

The Turnip Cake came with a spicy sauce this time but was still served lukewarm. The Turnip Cakes here were HK$15.

Poached Fresh Seasonal Vegetables--HK$15. It was iceberg lettuce but still tasty.

Tonic Medlar & Petal Cake--HK$11. This was almost like jello but not as sweet.

We tried one more location--this one in North Point. It also earned a Michelin Star.

The North Point location is located on Wharf Road. This was definitely more of a locals' place. The menu we got didn't have an English translation.

There was a slight wait when we arrived at 11:30am on a Friday.

We again rinsed our utensils with hot water but didn't see any cockroach this time.

Glutinous Rice Dumpling--HK$29. This was okay.

Steamed Beef Balls with Bean Curd Skin--HK$18. These were very good--the beef balls were so light and airy.

We had the Baked Bun with BBQ again--HK$21. I wish I could take them home.

When I got home, I researched locations in the US. Turns out they have a franchise in NYC and there will be one in Irvine & Las Vegas soon.
