A Walk in Balestrand

You could spend days hiking in Balestrand. There are trails lasting 2-10 hours, with elevation gains up to 1400 meters.

We chose an easy walk on the Heritage Trail. This is an level walk along the fjord that takes about an hour roundtrip.

The Church of St. Olof (English Church)--built in 1897. The Church of England is responsible for the church and maintains services throughout the summer months. This was the inspiration for the church in "Frozen."

It's a tiny church.

Further along the trail, you see the Balestrand Hotel. This is another option for accommodation if you don't want to stay at the Kviknes.

Statue of King Bele--a figure from the ancient saga of Fritjof the Warrior. Nearby are 2 grave mounds, which contained remnants of a boat, jewelry and weapons.

Beautiful views of the fjord along the walk.

Villas built in the Swiss style. Many of them have decorations of dragon heads.

This house seemed out of place. I almost thought I was in New England for a moment.

In town, you can visit the Aquarium or the new Tourist Museum. Neither sounded appealing to us so we chose to use the Kviknes' free rowboats and take it for a tour around the fjord.
