Skocjan Caves

There are 2 popular caves in Slovenia: Skocjan & Postojna. Postojna is a larger cave but it includes a train ride through the caves and I thought that was too "Disneyesque."

It's more strenuous to tour the Skocjan Caves. Over the course of the tour, you walk 2 miles and climb 400 steps. We chose the Skocjan Caves.

It was a 30-minute drive from Trieste to the Skocjan Caves in Slovenia.

The Skocjan Caves is a Unesco World Heritage Site. There are multiple options to tour the cave system. We chose Tour 1, which cost €16 and lasted 1 1/2 hours. It was a guided tour through the underground caves. Tour 2 followed the Reka River, mainly above ground and was self-guided.--€11 You could also combine the 2 tours for €21.

Our tour was at noon. We gathered in the courtyard then walked 15 minutes to the cave entrance.  The walk was on a flat path.

Once at the entrance, we were divided into groups, based on language. We had 4 groups, 2 in English, each with about 20-25 people.

The cave was amazing. I felt like I was on the set of "Indiana Jones." Everywhere I turned, it was another "wow." The cave was extensive and even had a footbridge. No pictures were allowed inside. This was a picture of the display at the ticket booth.

You walk along paths and climb multiple steps--tennis shoes are probably better.  It's also chilly in the cave so I would bring a sweater.

The Reka River runs through portions of the cave and this was the most impressive part of the cave.

This was the only picture we were allowed to take. It was at the exit.

You can follow the flat path to an elevator that took you back to the ticket booth.

An alternative is to take a short hike to see the waterfall. After this, you have to climb over 200 steps to the surface. I should have retraced my steps and taken the elevator.
